Lake Superior is called a lake, but standing on its shore, I can never think of it that way. It has a horizon, changing moods, deep cold water, and the immense silence of a northern sea. Boats are rare.
Almost every day, we took our kayaks onto the calm water. Beneath us, the lake was crystal clear and immediately deep. Ahead, there was almost nothing—only sky, water, distant hills, and two small kayaks moving across an enormous blue space.
But on another day, the wind became so strong that we had to secure every available guyline to the surrounding trees and drive extra stakes into the ground. Lake Superior can change its mood completely.
